{"id":151,"date":"2020-06-10T14:19:52","date_gmt":"2020-06-10T12:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/uk\/pavillon-de-manse\/"},"modified":"2020-11-03T12:47:40","modified_gmt":"2020-11-03T11:47:40","slug":"manse-pavilion","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/en\/history-heritage\/museums\/manse-pavilion\/","title":{"rendered":"Manse Pavilion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A 10-minute walk from the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/uk\/histoire-patrimoine\/les-chateaux\/chateau-de-chantilly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Ch\u00e2teau de Chantilly<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong>the Pavillon de Manse, also known as the \u2018Moulin des princes\u2019 (Princes\u2019 Mill) invites you to enjoy a unique experience on the banks of the river Nonette.<br><br>Built in the late 17th century, the Pavillon de Manse houses the <strong>\u2018Grandes Eaux\u2019 machine<\/strong> \u2013 a large wooden wheel designed to supply water to the ornamental ponds and fountains of the ch\u00e2teau gardens. Over the centuries, various water-powered machines have complemented this unique machine. Today, you are invited to witness the operation of these machines, which have been <strong>restored by a team of enthusiastic volunteers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong><strong>A machine for a lavish display<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Andr\u00e9 Le N\u00f4tre<\/strong>, the king\u2019s gardener, was hired to create a garden with <strong>\u2018Grandes Eaux\u2019 <\/strong>(large water features) in the Ch\u00e2teau de Chantilly\u2019s park. To enable the functioning of the many fountains that were planned, it was necessary to build a <strong>machine<\/strong> that would fill with water a large reservoir, from which the pipes would run. <strong>Jacques de Manse, <\/strong>a businessman and advisor to the king, is responsible of these works, while master carpenter Albert built the wooden water wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And to house this extraordinary machine, a remarkable <strong>stone structure<\/strong> was built by the king&#8217;s architect,<strong> Jules Hardouin Mansart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" data-src=\"https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/pavillon-de-Manse-2-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-888\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/pavillon-de-Manse-2-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/pavillon-de-Manse-2-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/pavillon-de-Manse-2-650x488.jpg 650w, https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/pavillon-de-Manse-2-280x210.jpg 280w, https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/pavillon-de-Manse-2-900x675.jpg 900w, https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/pavillon-de-Manse-2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong><strong>Continuing to pioneer in hydraulics<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Revolution, the Chantilly estate was declared a <em>bien national.<\/em> The hydraulic machine was brought under the control of the municipality and was used to <strong>supply water<\/strong> to the developing city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1840, the <strong>Duke of Aumale<\/strong>, who had returned to his property, dismantled the now out-of-order 17th-century machine and had it replaced by a new pump. A new turbine system was installed in 1870, in line with the <strong>latest advancements in technology<\/strong>. Drilling more than 100 metres deep enabled <strong>the ch\u00e2teau<\/strong> and its dependencies to be supplied with <strong>drinking water<\/strong>. A laundry equipped with a calender \u2013 a machine used to press the laundry \u2013 was installed in the adjacent building. The Pavillon de Manse remained active until 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>A new life<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1997, the<strong> Association Pavillon Jacques de Manse<\/strong>, made up of volunteers, was formed to restore the interior of the building and its <strong>hydraulic machines<\/strong>. The wooden <strong>water wheel<\/strong> was <strong>rebuilt <\/strong>as it was described in 1784 in an album preserved at <a href=\"https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/uk\/histoire-patrimoine\/les-musees\/musee-conde\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mus\u00e9e Cond\u00e9<\/a>. It was inaugurated in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visiting this little-known industrial treasure is an <strong>entertaining experience that is accessible<\/strong> to all.
