\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong><strong>First a ch\u00e2teau<\/strong><\/strong> \u2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Philippe de Beaumanoir<\/strong>, bailiff of Senlis, was the first builder of the<strong> Manoir de Moncel<\/strong>. In 1296, <strong>Philip the Fair<\/strong>, the eleventh king of France \u2013 a direct descendant of Hugh Capet, the first king elected at <a href=\"https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/uk\/histoire-patrimoine\/des-villes-historiques\/senlis-pays-dart-et-dhistoire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senlis<\/a> \u2013 decided to come and live in the Manor and make it his <strong>Maison Royal<\/strong>. He appreciated the proximity of the<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/uk\/randos-balades\/les-paysages-du-parc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Halatte forest<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>hunting grounds. Ironically, he died here following a fall from his horse, during a hunt with hounds, in 1314. The castle remained a royal residence until 1709, when Louis XIV donated it to the Clarisses. It was then <strong>demolished <\/strong>and some of the stones were used for the construction of the current enceinte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong><strong>\u2026 Then a feminine abbey<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1309, perhaps to redeem himself for having destroyed the Templars, King <strong>Philippe the Fair<\/strong> founded <strong>a convent<\/strong> so that the <strong>Clarisses sisters<\/strong> would pray for him, his successors and the prosperity of the kingdom. It was completed, by the King <strong>Philippe of Valois and his wife Joan of Burgundy<\/strong>, only in 1336. The queen gave <strong>many gifts<\/strong> to the convent and requested in her will that her entrails be buried in the abbey church. Many other noble ladies copied her, which provided additional income for the Abbaye de Moncel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various saints and <strong>great ladies<\/strong> linked to royal powers passed through the abbey and contributed to its fame throughout history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"747\" height=\"500\" data-src=\"https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Salle-des-Charpentes-Abbaye-Royale-du-Moncel.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-813\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Salle-des-Charpentes-Abbaye-Royale-du-Moncel.jpg 747w, https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Salle-des-Charpentes-Abbaye-Royale-du-Moncel-200x134.jpg 200w, https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Salle-des-Charpentes-Abbaye-Royale-du-Moncel-650x435.jpg 650w, https:\/\/destination.parc-oise-paysdefrance.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Salle-des-Charpentes-Abbaye-Royale-du-Moncel-280x187.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 747px) 100vw, 747px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Declin<\/strong>e<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the late 16th century, the Eighth War of Religion (1585\u201398) seriously disrupted the life of the abbey. Then, with Louis XIV\u2019s rise to power, the abbey lost royal favour. During the French Revolution, the abbey church was destroyed and the abbey sold as a <em>bien national<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During its <strong>426 years of existence<\/strong>, the abbey housed <strong>492 nuns<\/strong>, who spent most of their lives there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, it was occupied by a wine merchant.
